The South African Air Force (SAAF) operated eight Avro Shackleton MR.3 maritime patrol aircraft from 1957 to 1984, crucial for guarding the Cape sea routes, replacing Short Sunderlands. The SAAF’s unique Mk.3 version featured tricycle landing gear and extra tip tanks for longer range. Today, SAAF Shackleton 1722, “Pelican 22”, is the sole airworthy example, maintained by the SAAF Museum at AFB Ysterplaat, though grounded for preservation, with engine runs sometimes held
