History
A thoroughbred fighting aero plane, the Mustang possessed the range, speed and firepower needed to secure air supremacy in the skies over Europe and despite only entering the Second World War during its latter stages, was regarded as one of the most effective fighters of the entire war – an ‘Ace’ maker.

The North American P-51D Mustang holds a legendary place in South African military history, primarily through its service during the Korean War with the famed “Flying Cheetahs” of No. 2 Squadron.
Operational History in South Africa: The South African Air Force (SAAF) operated several versions of the Mustang across two major conflicts:
World War II: The SAAF first flew early P-51B/C models (known as Mustang Mk IIIs) and later P-51Ds (Mustang Mk IVs) with 5 Squadron during the Italian campaign starting in September 1944. These aircraft were used for bomber escort and ground attack until the squadron was disbanded in 1945. Korean War (1950–1953): No. 2 Squadron, attached to the USAF 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing, operated F-51D Mustangs (the post-WWII designation for the P-51D).
