Description
The Schaufelradbagger 289 is a modern, German-made bucket wheel excavator, which is essentially a gigantic, mobile, mining machine. The device was put into operation at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. Machines of this type are intended primarily for the extraction of lignite from deposits in Germany. It is assumed that the bucket excavators with an overrunning wheel are currently the largest tracked vehicles on earth. For example, the Schaufelradbagger 288 has a total length of 220 meters, 96 meters high and 45 meters wide! Its speed is only 2 to 10 meters per minute. However, its mass is as much as 13,500 tons. It is worth adding that the Schaufelradbagger 289 has almost exactly the same dimensions and technical capabilities. It was built by the companies: Orenstein und Koppel and Lübecker Maschinenbau Gesellschaft for the needs opencast mine in Hambach, which is currently operated by the energy concern RWE Power AG.
