Description

After landing in Normandy in June 1944, the Allies planned to invade German territory in order to end the war as soon as possible. Bernard Montgomery was planned to do so, with the “Market Garden” operation, which involved the circumvention of German defenses through the use of British, American and Polish airborne troops. The paratroopers had to acquire control of the bridges in the Netherlands, between Eindhoven and Arnhem, in order to ensure the garrison of the connecting lines for the entry of the Allied forces in Germany. The strong German resistance and the failure to cross the Rhine by the Allies, however, compromised the operation that proved to be a failure. The war reached out and it took another month of fighting before the Allied enters Germany. Hartenstein, during Operation Market Garden, was the nerve center of the activities and was employed as the headquarters of the 1st British Airborne Division.
