Description
The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt undoubtedly plays an important role in the history of military aviation. The US low-wing single-seater fighter-bomber was characterized by the adoption of the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine of over 2,000 HP, which allowed significant speeds, especially in the highest altitudes and to guarantee extraordinary operational flexibility. The P-47 was in fact effective both as a fighter, for the escort to the bombers, and as a lethal plane for ground support missions and ground attack missions. Extremely robust in his construction cell, he was heavy armed with eight Browning M2 machine guns from 12.7 mm and could be equipped with bombs and rockets in order to increase its offensive capacity. It was successfully employed by the United States, from 1943 onwards, on the various operational fronts.
