Historical Service
During World War II, the Spitfire Mk VIII was used extensively in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO), where many SAAF personnel were deployed.
Operational Role: SAAF pilots, such as Lt. John Gasson and Lt. A. Sachs, flew the Mk VIII while seconded to RAF units like No. 92 Squadron in Italy.
Notable Achievements: Lt. Gasson famously claimed the 300th kill for No. 92 Squadron while flying a Spitfire Mk VIII (serial JF476) in early 1944.
Variants: Some Mk VIII aircraft used in the Mediterranean featured a “High Altitude” scheme (Medium Sea Grey over Azure Blue) and extended wingtips.
