South Africa briefly evaluated the German Dornier Do-27 STOL utility aircraft in the late 1950s for the SAAF, acquiring two for testing, though a Cessna was ultimately chosen, with one Do-27 tragically crashing in 1962 and the other sold. While the SAAF’s use was limited, civilian Do-27s, famous for their ruggedness and excellent Short Take-Off & Landing (STOL) for game spotting (like the famous Grzimek’s zebra-striped planes in the Serengeti), have seen private ownership and use in South Africa, with a few still flying.
